
A man will be charged in court for stepping on the Quran and sharing the video online, facing penalties under the Penal Code and Communications Act.
PUTRAJAYA: A man accused of stepping on the Quran and sharing the act on social media will be charged in court tomorrow.
The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) confirmed today that charges will be brought against S. Vikneswaran in the Kuantan Court.
A thorough review of police investigation papers found sufficient grounds to proceed with the case.
The incident allegedly occurred in Kuantan, Pahang.
Vikneswaran will face two separate charges before the court.
He will be charged under Section 295 of the Penal Code for defiling a sacred object.
The charge specifies he stepped on the Quran knowing the act would insult Islam.
A second charge will be made under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
This relates to making an offensive communication with intent to annoy others via the Threads application.
Section 295 of the Penal Code carries a penalty of up to two years’ jail, a fine, or both.
Section 233 of the Communications Act provides for a fine up to RM500,000, or two years’ jail, or both.
The 21-year-old suspect is a student of Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah.
He was arrested on February 25 for allegedly insulting Islam through the upload.
Kuantan police chief ACP Ashari Abu Samah said his remand was extended until Tuesday.
This was to allow investigations to be completed per the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s instructions.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday stressed the government will not allow any insult to the Quran.
He also urged the public to remain patient and avoid hasty action during police investigations.
