Man United v Aston Villa LIVE: Michael Carrick’s side fall apart again after spirited comeback

Manchester United host Aston Villa in the Premier League as under-fire manager Michael Carrick looks to build on their incredible comeback victory against Roma in midweek and stay in his job beyond the international break.

It was Tuesday night all over again at Old Trafford as United fell two goals down inside the first five minutes. Goals from Alysson and Nicolas Jackson gave Unai Emery’s side a dream start, the earliest United had been 2-0 down in a Premier League game.

But, like in midweek, United responded well. Matheus Cunha was fouled in the box by Boubacar Kamara and Bruno Fernandes stepped up to pull one back, sparking a period of constant United pressure as goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was forced into several saves.

Youri Tielemans then scored his first United goal, against his former club, to equalise before the stroke of half-time.

Man United 2-4 Aston Villa

17:57 , Jamie Braidwood

66 mins: A triple change for United with Mason Mount, Patrick Dorgu and Shea Lacey coming on. There are cheers, from both ends I think, that Tielemans, Dalot and Amad are replaced.

Richard Jolly adds: The Villa fans are singing "10 more years, 10 more years, Unai Emery".

Man United 2-4 Aston Villa

17:54 , Jamie Braidwood

63 mins: Fernandes plays it square to Cunha but his shot is deflected wide, off Torres. Given how crazy this game has been you wouldn’t rule out United getting something from this if they just manage to pull another back.

Man United 2-4 Aston Villa

17:53 , Jamie Braidwood

61 mins: Tielemans blasts a shot over and is then booed by the Villa fans when he goes over to the corner to take a throw-in. A silly Goretzka foul on Amad gives United a free-kick in a decent position.

Man United 2-4 Aston Villa

17:49 , Jamie Braidwood

57 mins: Credit to Villa, they’ve put the first half behind them and resumed in the second as if they are superior team. United had energy in the first half but it’s been sucked out of them now. They need another Cunha moment or Fernandes penalty.

Man United 2-4 Aston Villa

17:48 , Jamie Braidwood

55 mins: Ayden Heaven wipes out the excellent Alysson. He was late to the ball.

United’s two 20-year-old centre-backs are struggling, again.

GOAL! Man United 2-4 Aston Villa (GORETZKA 52')

17:44 , Jamie Braidwood

It’s a replay of the first half as Villa pile on the misery on United!

It’s a horrible moment for Leny Yoro as he heads McGinn’s free-kick onto his own crossbar. Leon Goretzka is there to tuck in the rebound.

Old Trafford is stunned.

50 mins: What next? It felt as if United spent a lot of energy chasing the game the whole of the first half. Now, they have to do it again.

But delight for Villa, who lead again after another fast start to the half.

John McGinn missed a penalty against Fulham last week. He has scored his spot kick this week. But that really showed why Carrick should have swapped Mazraoui and Dalot at half-time to get Dalot away from Alysson.

47 mins: A SHOCKING start to the second half for United! It’s Dalot on Alysson. A clear penalty.

Big call from Michael Carrick

17:37 , Richard Jolly

On comes Ayden Heaven, fresh from his hellish performance against Roma. It isn't the biggest issue at United right now but De Ligt has been overlooked again

A forced change at half-time for United. Ayden Heaven is on, for Harry Maguire.

So that’s Heaven and Leny Yoro in defence for United, two 20-year-olds.

Back underway.

HALF TIME! Man United 2-2 Aston Villa

17:33 , Jamie Braidwood

According to Opta, this is the first time Manchester United have gone 2-0 down in a home Premier League game and come back to level at half-time.

Incidentally, the last time United came from 2-0 down to win a game in the Premier League was on Boxing Day 2023... against Aston Villa.

HALF TIME! Man United 2-2 Aston Villa

17:21 , Jamie Braidwood

What a game this has been. Michael Carrick jogs back down the tunnel.

His side were in tatters, again, as they fell 2-0 down to Villa inside five minutes.

But United responded, again, as they came from behind to level by half-time.

There were some Villa appeals for a penalty right on the stroke of half-time.

But there was not enough contact from Fernandes on Alysson in the box.

 (Getty)

Man United 2-2 Aston Villa

17:20 , Jamie Braidwood

45+1 mins: And there was still time for Alysson to race onto a through pass but chip his effort beyond the on-rushing Lammens and past the post.

What a half a football this has been.

Youri Tielemans scores first Man United goal

17:17 , Richard Jolly, at Old Trafford

Tielemans' first United goal comes against his old club. The Villa fans told him earlier he should have "stayed at a big club".

GOAL! Man United 2-2 Aston Villa (TIELEMANS 44')

17:16 , Jamie Braidwood

OF COURSE IT IS!

Tielemans strikes against his former club and United are deservedly level! Mazraoui’s pull-back breaks to Tielemans and Fernandes and it’s the former Villa midfielder who takes charge. He slots the ball beyond Suzuki, who appeals that Mbuemo was interfering from an offside position. But the goal stands!

 (Reuters)

SAVE! Man United 1-2 Aston Villa

17:15 , Jamie Braidwood

43 mins: It should be 2-2! Kamara loses possession and United suddenly have the man over in Amad on the right. He just has Suzuki to beat but the shot is not into the corner and the goalkeeper makes the save. Big chance.

Man United 1-2 Aston Villa

17:14 , Jamie Braidwood

41 mins: Spirited response or not, it still applies that, as it stands, Manchester United will be 19th in the Premier League over the international break.

Suzuki is sharp off his line to cut out the long ball towards Amad. Then Jackson is wasteful when Villa had the chance to break clear.

 (Getty)

CLOSE! Man United 1-2 Aston Villa

17:09 , Jamie Braidwood

37 mins: He’s still not scored since December but this wasn’t far away from Amad Diallo. He beats Maatsen but then curls just wide of the post, with Suzuki looking beaten.

Man United 1-2 Aston Villa

17:08 , Jamie Braidwood

36 mins: A wayward pass from Harry Maguire into touch has allowed Villa to get a bit of a foothold after a whirlwind 20 minutes. It was like they were in a tumble-dryer.

Man United 1-2 Aston Villa

17:07 , Richard Jolly, at Old Trafford

35 mins: Old Trafford gets to its feet for a chorus of "stand up if you hate Glazers"

The Villa fans reply with "We want Glazers in". Although presumably not in at Villa.

Impressive response from United

17:03 , Richard Jolly

31 mins: The cunning element of the United masterplan is that, by going 2-0 down so early, they have longer in which to mount a comeback. And, in fairness, they are putting in a valiant effort to recover from that shocking start.

 (Reuters)

Man United 1-2 Aston Villa

17:01 , Jamie Braidwood

28 mins: A cross or a shot from Fernandes? Either way, Suzuki hs to scramble to cover his post as Fernandes pulled it back from the angle. Then, Amad’s shot is deflected wide.

This is like it’s in stoppage-time! United sense the equaliser.

 (Getty)

Man United 1-2 Aston Villa

16:59 , Jamie Braidwood

27 mins: Now Mainoo’s deflected shot loops up but drops into the grateful grasp of Suzuki, who has had a busy 10 minutes. United are targeting the goalkeeper from corners after his error in the 1-1 draw with Fulham last week.

CLOSE! Man United 1-2 Aston Villa

16:58 , Jamie Braidwood

26 mins: Suzuki was scrambling as the ball fell to Fernandes and his shot was blocked by McGinn! It drops just wide of the post. It’s been all United since Fernandes pulled one back.

Perhaps going 0-2 down was deliberate.

Man Utd look to Cunha

16:57 , Richard Jolly, at Old Trafford

Cunha represents United's best hope of turning this around. Partly because of his catalytic display against Roma but partly because he seems to have the better of Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who is making his first Premier League appearance for Villa at right-back. Which, it is very clear to see, is definitely not his best position.

 (Getty)

Man United 1-2 Aston Villa

16:56 , Jamie Braidwood

24 mins: Cunha appears to be in the mood. The Brazilian cuts inside and bends a shot towards the top corner. Suzuki springs to his left to claw it away.

Man United 1-2 Aston Villa

16:51 , Jamie Braidwood

18 mins: What is it about Manchester United and chasing a game? It feels like they have more of a chance now than they did at kick-off. Old Trafford is up for it too, urging the players to press as Villa pass it around the back. There is life and energy in Carrick’s struggling side now.

Another comeback loading?

16:48 , Richard Jolly

The comeback against Roma began with a penalty won by Matheus Cunha and scored by Bruno Fernandes. Cue another 3-2?

 (Getty)

GOAL! Man United 1-2 Aston Villa (FERNANDES PEN 15')

16:47 , Jamie Braidwood

It was Fernandes’ retaken penalty that sparked the comeback against Roma on Tuesday.... can the captain get United back in it now?

He can! Sends Suzuki the wrong way.

Game on?

PENALTY! Man United 0-2 Aston Villa

16:45 , Jamie Braidwood

13 mins: Now, now! It’s Cunha, who spared the comeback against Roma, who drives forward into the box, before he is chopped down by Kamara.

A chance for United to respond!

Man United 0-2 Aston Villa

16:44 , Jamie Braidwood

11 mins: Aston Villa fans are having a good time. “You’re going down with Man City”, they cry. They’re also telling Youri Tielemans, who starts against them for the first time, that he should have “signed for a big club”.

 (Getty)

Man United 0-2 Aston Villa

16:43 , Jamie Braidwood

10 mins: In midweek, Roma paid the price for not finishing United off.

Jackson suddenly has the who half in front of him, but Maguire slows him down.

Fernandes then drags a shot wide. It’s been a frantic start.

 (Getty)

Man United 0-2 Aston Villa

8 mins: Unsurprisingly, this is the earliest United have been 2-0 down in a Premier League game.

Aston VIlla cannot believe it.

Man United 0-2 Aston Villa

United were two down after 18 minutes to Roma. They have taken that to another level here, going two down in four.

 (Reuters)

GOAL! Man United 0-2 Aston Villa (JACKSON)

16:36 , Jamie Braidwood

TWO IN FOUR MINUTES.

Ridiculous. Astonishing. Have United ever been lower?

Alysson’s shot is straight at Lammens but he can’t keep hold of it.

Nicolas Jackson is there to finish and continue his scoring run.

United are two down, already!

Same, same problems for Man United

16:36 , Richard Jolly

A spectacularly bad start, even by United's standards. If Senne Lammens was most at fault for Alysson's goal, it is the third successive goal United have conceded where Diogo Dalot was partly culpable

 (Reuters)

GOAL! Man United 0-1 Aston Villa (ALYSSON)

16:33 , Jamie Braidwood

INSIDE ONE MINUTE.

Incredible start for Villa! More disaster for United and Carrick!

It’s a copy of Tuesday night against Roma. McGinn feeds the ball to his right and there’s Alysson is, unbelievably, in all the space he needs.

He fires the ball through Lammens’ legs and Old Trafford is stunned.

KICK-OFF! Man United 0-0 Aston Villa

Underway! United have slipped to 19th in the Premier League after Sunderland’s win over Chelsea. Is there any way Michael Carrick survives if they remain there over the international break?

Man United v Aston Villa

16:28 , Jamie Braidwood

There was joy and unity following the raucous comeback against Roma in midweek. Now, with more protest and discontent at the owners at Old Trafford, there is a strange atmosphere indeed before another must-win clash for Michael Carrick.

“We want Glazers out” is the cry.

There will be a pause for Remembrance Sunday before kick-off.

Man United fans stage protest before Aston Villa clash

Manchester United supporters have staged another protest against the ownership ahead of this afternoon’s clash against Aston Villa. The anti-Glazer green and gold balloons are out in force, and there is talk of a walkout in the 21st minute.

The players are coming out next, with kick-off to follow.

Reminder of Man Utd v Aston Villa team news

16:20 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football Correspondent

For a few minutes earlier today, Manchester United hit rock bottom: bottom of the Premier League. Then Crystal Palace conceded to Liverpool and they went up to 19th in the live table. They, and Michael Carrick, could do with a win. Carrick resists the temptation to pick Shea Lacey and instead keeps Amad in the team. After Ayden Heaven's poor performance against Roma, it is Noussair Mazraoui who stands in for the suspended Lisandro Martinez. A former United defender, Victor Lindelof, returns to Old Trafford as Aston Villa's right-back, with Matty Cash banned.

Michael Carrick, Sir Alex Ferguson and Man United’s seemingly impossible question

16:15 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football Correspondent

Even as he risks being consigned to Manchester United history, Michael Carrick was talking about Manchester United’s history. They are celebrating one of their managers and, whether or not Aston Villa are defeated on Sunday, it is not him. Friday marked the 40th anniversary of Sir Alex Ferguson’s appointment. There is a dinner this weekend to honour the great Scot.

There is also the chance Sunday marks Carrick’s last game at the helm. Ferguson has been in charge for two-thirds of the last four decades and end his tenure of his own volition, retiring after 26-and-a-half years. Carrick could become the seventh man sacked since then, without even including the interim appointment Ralf Rangnick. He is already the fifth of Ferguson’s former players to have served as caretaker manager.

Ferguson has been the inspiration for them all. He remains the benchmark, the gold standard, but also the anomaly.

A banner at Old Trafford, commemorating Ferguson, reads: “The impossible dream”. For much of the last 13 years, following him has seemed similarly impossible.

Michael Carrick lays down challenge to Champions League hero Matheus Cunha

Michael Carrick has challenged Matheus Cunha to replicate his catalytic display against Roma, when he won a penalty and scored two goals, to double his tally for the season.

“He has to repeat that performance,” Carrick said. “He was fantastic and that's close to his best, and that's the level where we want to see.”

Cunha was sent off after his dramatic double against Roma, but is free to play in the Premier League.

Michael Carrick backs Bruno Fernandes and insists attitude is ‘as good as ever’

15:35 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football Correspondent

Michael Carrick said Bruno Fernandes’ attitude is “as good as ever” and he has no doubts about his commitment again after their falling-out.

The United manager dropped his captain after Fernandes criticised his tactics during the 4-1 defeat to Como and chose not to bring him on in the 3-0 loss to Bournemouth.

But Carrick and Fernandes held talks last week and the Portuguese returned to the team at Chelsea on Saturday before playing his part in their comeback win over Roma, scoring their first goal with a twice-taken penalty and providing the assist for Matheus Cunha’s equaliser.

“I think by his actions, the way he's played and how he dealt with even retaking the penalty and frame of mind he was in for that, I think that tells everything,” said Carrick. “Yeah, Bruno's as good as ever.”

The 45-year-old has not revealed if Fernandes apologised to him, adding: “What's actually said in that discussion, you'll be pleased to know I'll keep that to myself.

“But I think it's pretty clear we've moved in a good direction, and Bruno's commitment is undoubted for me of what he brings to this team and this club, and I think he showed that again this week.”

Taylor Harwood-Bellis starts for Aston Villa at Old Trafford

15:23 , Jamie Braidwood

Taylor Harwood-Bellis makes his first Premier League start for Aston Villa, who are without both the suspended Matty Cash and the injured Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Harwood-Bellis joined Villa in a £25m move from Southampton and is the son-in-law of former United captain Roy Keane. Leon Goretzka and Alysson also come in as Unai Emery makes three changes from the team that lost 3-0 at Barcelona in midweek, with Cash, Joao Gomes and Emi Buendia dropping out.

Inside the indecision at Man United and the question that will decide Michael Carrick’s future

14:20 , Miguel Delaney, Chief Football Writer

As Manchester United returned to the training ground after this week’s Champions League heroics, some there couldn’t help but repeat an old football truth: “Everything feels completely different after a win.”

That will be even more pronounced now, given that United have just ended their longest winless run in 40 years. The 3-2 win over Roma was their first victory since the 4-0 over Sabah, 10 games ago.

Amid the raucous celebrations from a vintage comeback, there was of course considerable relief. It at least, for now, puts off a huge call.

Why Unai Emery is committing to Aston Villa

13:40 , Jamie Braidwood

“My ambition is to keep our consistency and how we are improving and building lots of things positively. It is a huge challenge.

“They decided, speaking with us last year, to build a new stand to add more supporters at Villa Park. That is a clear step forward to get better.

“How we are increasing our budget each year, and revenue through our performance by playing in Europe and improving players, selling players, then buying young talented players, this is the process and ambition we should keep in the future.

“I had a good meeting with Nassef Sawiris, very good meeting, very positive. Let’s talk next week, trying to get everything we spoke about together.

“We were speaking about how we can set our project stronger with a deal, yes.”

Unai Emery confirms Villa talks over new contract to build 'stronger' project

13:20 , PA

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery confirmed there have been talks to build a “stronger” project at the club by signing a new contract at Villa Park.

On Wednesday, the day after Villa’s 3-0 Champions League defeat to Barcelona, the club announced they held a meeting to discuss their long-term strategy beyond 2029, when Emery’s contract is due to expire.

The Villa boss has been linked with several other clubs – including Sunday’s opponents Manchester United – but was involved with long-term talks which included the club’s chairman Nassef Sawiris.

There has been no confirmation of a new deal for the Spaniard, but Emery touched on committing his long-term future with the club and says there will be further contract talks next week.

Man United dealt midfield set-back as Carlos Baleba potentially out until Christmas

13:00 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football Correspondent

Manchester United will be without Carlos Baleba for several weeks due to the hamstring injury he suffered against Roma.

United are waiting to discover if the £70m signing will play again this year as they are still to learn the full extent of his problem.

“We don't know, but it will be a number of weeks,” said manager Michael Carrick, “It won’t be after the international break [that Baleba returns]. It'll be a little bit longer than that.”

The 22-year-old went off in tears after pulling up in the first minute of the second half on Tuesday and was not expected to be fit for Sunday’s match against Aston Villa.

But now he is set to miss the trip to Anfield on 22 November and the Champions League game against Sporting CP three days later.

United face seven games in December, including a visit to Arsenal on December 20 and it is uncertain if Baleba will be fit in time to return then.

Baleba, who missed the start of the season with an ankle injury, has only started five games since his £70m move from Brighton.

Man Utd interest in Julian Nagelsmann cools 'significantly'

12:40 , Miguel Delaney, Chief Football Writer

Julian Nagelsmann’s stock has significantly dropped, meanwhile. While Manchester United’s Christoph Vivell is said to be a fan, others in the hierarchy will be aware that Bayern Munich would not speak highly about his time there. The players didn’t respond well to his approach or personality, and the image persists of Nagelsmann arriving to training on a skateboard. It is hard not to think of a line from The Sopranos. In the same way “a don doesn’t wear shorts”, a Manchester United manager doesn’t have a skateboard.

Why Man United 'racked by indecision' over Michael Carrick future

12:35 , Miguel Delaney, Chief Football Writer

Manchester United have been racked by indecision over the future of Michael Carrick. Numerous sources say there is a sense that no one was actually willing to make a call on the manager, a problem compounded by the fact they have “little idea” over a replacement.

In fairness, there are questions and debates over all of the main alternatives. United are understood to be much less sold on Eddie Howe than perception would have it. Sebastian Hoeness is highly rated, but his appointment would still involve a huge Ruben Amorim-like leap from Stuttgart. Fabian Hurzeler might struggle without Brighton’s structure amid higher stakes, and there are doubts over whether United can even afford the compensation. Cesc Fabregas is impressing at Como but isn’t going anywhere for now, and is viewed as Mikel Arteta’s eventual successor at Arsenal.

Good afternoon and welcome

12:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Manchester United remain in a ‘will they, won’t they’ situation as they prepare to host Aston Villa in the Premier League and their last match before the international break.

Michael Carrick has so far survived the thrashing at Como, the humiliation at Bournemouth and the unravelling at Chelsea, while finally ending United’s nine-match winless run by beating Roma in the Champions League in midweek.

But will that be enough? Or can Unai Emery’s Aston Villa give United another day to forget and leave the Old Trafford hierarchy with a decision to make over the upcoming fortnight.
