Manchester United failed with a bid for Brighton striker Evan Ferguson over the summer.
ESPN says United offered 50m for the 18 year-old Republic of Ireland international.
However, the offer was 'laughed off' by the Brighton board.
United moved for Ferguson after landing Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta and remain interested in the teen.
Ferguson has four goals this season, including a hat-trick in victory over Newcastle.
