Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag made it a personal mission to sign Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia.

The Holland left-back was on his way to Lyon, where Peter Bosz is in charge, before a personal call made by Ten Hag convinced him about Old Trafford.

Feyenoord chief Frank Arnesen announced yesterday that a United offer had been accepted for Malacia.

Writing for De Telegraaf, Marcel van der Kraan revealed Ten Hag had been keen to sign the defender when in charge of Ajax.

Van der Kraan wrote: "But Ten Hag did not dare to call on Malacia as a reinforcement during his period as Ajax trainer. In fact, he thought it wise not to poll the primal Rotterdammer from 'South' for talks about a transfer."

But Ten Hag's stand changed instantly as he left Ajax for United.
