Malaysian police have confirmed that the man allegedly involved in refuelling a Singapore-registered vehicle with RON95 petrol has surrendered himself to assist with investigations.
According to The Straits Times, Kulai district police chief Tan Seng Lee said the 63-year-old man, accompanied by his 67-year-old wife, arrived at the Kulai police headquarters yesterday (Jan 5)
“The investigation paper will be completed and referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further action,” he said in a statement.
What happened
The incident took place in Kulai, Johor, on Jan 2 at around 10.36pm.
A short video that surfaced on social media the following day showed a man refuelling a vehicle with subsidised RON95 petrol, which is reserved exclusively for Malaysia-registered vehicles.
In the clip, the car’s licence plate appeared to be partially taped over. A voice off-camera was heard questioning the man about his nationality, to which he replied that he was Malaysian.
Investigation underway
However, police later confirmed that the suspect is a Singapore permanent resident (PR). The vehicle, a Volkswagen Jetta, was later found parked at an apartment in Yishun.
Police have urged the public not to speculate while investigations are ongoing, adding that appropriate action will be taken once the probe is completed.
