A 26-year-old man who could not swim has drowned while bathing in the Danube near Regensburg, police said on Wednesday.

The man disappeared beneath the surface within seconds on Tuesday in the area of the Nibelungen Bridge, police said.

A large-scale search operation involving a helicopter and several boats continued into the evening. After several hours, the 26-year-old was located by sonar and recovered, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Police urged caution at bodies of water following the fatal bathing accident, saying non-swimmers should avoid swimming trips to rivers and that flowing water was dangerous even for experienced swimmers.

In an emergency, people should call the emergency services immediately and provide assistance from the bank, police said.
