  • A Chinese man, Shenghua Wen, has been sentenced to eight years in jail for smuggling firearms and ammunition to North Korea.
  • Wen received approximately $2m from North Korean officials for shipping two containers of weapons and other items from California via Hong Kong in 2023.
  • He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government.
  • Wen admitted he believed the weapons were intended for a surprise attack on South Korea and attempted to procure uniforms for North Korean soldiers.
  • He acquired a federal firearms licensee business to facilitate the smuggling, sending multiple containers with false declarations and attempting to ship sensitive technology.
