Man who stored mother’s body in freezer and claimed £78,000 of her benefits jailed

  • Christopher Phillips has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison for storing his dead mother in a freezer and fraudulently claiming her benefits.
  • He pleaded guilty to preventing the lawful and decent burial of his 89-year-old mother, Silvia Phillips, at their home in Porthcawl, Wales.
  • Phillips also admitted to two counts of fraud, failing to notify the Department for Work and Pensions and Bridgend County Borough Council of his mother's death.
  • He continued to receive over £78,000 in benefits after his mother passed away on 8 March 2023.
  • The cause of Silvia Phillips' death remains unknown, and her body was found in a chest freezer covered with a leopard print throw, roses, and a birthday card.
