A MAN believed to be suffering from mental health issues was detained by police on Thursday night after trespassing and perching on the roof of a house in Semenyih near Kajang, armed with a knife.
Kajang District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said the authorities were alerted to the incident by a member of the public at around 8.50pm. The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) was also deployed to the scene to assist.
"After nearly four hours of negotiations, the 48-year-old man, who was clad only in shorts, was safely apprehended and the weapon seized at the scene," he said in a statement on Friday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, who is not from the area, suffers from mental health problems. He was subsequently taken to Kajang Hospital for further evaluation.
Naazron added that checks on the suspect’s background uncovered 26 previous criminal records, including several related to narcotics. Authorities are still investigating how the man ended up at the property and what prompted the incident.
The case is being investigated under Section 447 of the Penal Code for criminal trespass and Section 6 of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact Investigating Officer Inspector Mohamad Khairie Ridhwan Azmi at 011-36307974.
