Police shot and wounded a man near Frankfurt's main railway station on Tuesday after he attacked and injured an officer during a police check, authorities said.

The man, who police said was armed with a sharp object, was taken to hospital. Authorities have not released details about his identity.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots at around 4 pm (1400 GMT) and then seeing a man being treated on the ground, according to dpa reporters at the scene. The incident occurred at Kaisertor, a square opposite the city's main station.

Police were conducting one of their regular inspection operations in the station district when the incident occurred.

The area around Frankfurt's main station has long been the focus of police operations due to persistent drug-related crime.

Since the launch of a security initiative in February 2024, authorities have carried out more than 50 large-scale operations in the city centre aimed at improving public safety.
