Managing health and high performance under the newly tabled Malaysia Budget 2027 requires balancing tighter financial efficiency with strategic pivot toward preventive care, integration and digital transformation. From medical insurance and hospital bills to treatment access and elderly care, Prime Minister Datuk Sri Anwar Ibrahim had unveiled the government's plan and direction for healthcare system of the nation. However, with the Ministry of Health's allocation rising to RM47.7 billion only - representing a modest 2.5% increase, noted by health analysts as the smallest percentage growth in 5 years - organization leaders must shift from expensive reactive measures to smart, budget-conscious strategies that sustain high performance without causing burnout.

As a management educator and corporate HRD practitioner, I have known for a long time that managers have a powerful influence on the attitude, feelings, and mental wellbeing of their people. Managers who appreciate and support their people's efforts are likely to have employees who feel good about themselves and their jobs, people who go to work with a best skip in their step and a twinkle in their eyes. On the other hand, when a manager is unappreciative, punishing & accents the negative, employees are much more likely to dread work, perform only when closely supervised.

In taking to managers and workers in all areas of the country, I hear far more stories of people who are treated badly on the job than those who are treated well. I also listen as companies tell me their “war stories” about financial effects of poor health. Saddest of all, I see the real stress and performance problems that result from people being poorly managed. I'm struck by the tremendous waste of human resources from these combined problems, knowing full well they could be turned around if managers knew what to do from the standpoint of increasing their people's potential.
