Manchester United boss Carrick insists squad is stronger despite rival spending

  • Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has insisted the club possesses a stronger squad than last season, maintaining that they made the most of their available budget despite being significantly outspent by Premier League rivals.
  • The club invested £148m to rebuild their midfield by signing Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos following the departure of Casemiro, though they opted not to recruit a centre-back or left-back during the transfer window.
  • Premier League competitors vastly outspent United during the window, with Manchester City spending over £400m, Chelsea and Tottenham exceeding £300m, and four other top-flight clubs investing more than £200m.
  • Carrick praised the quality of the new arrivals and refuted suggestions of being restricted, stating he was delighted with the transfers and confident the club extracted maximum value from their expenditure.
  • Forward Joshua Zirkzee will remain at Old Trafford after United rejected a deadline-day loan offer from Everton, with Carrick highlighting the Netherlands international's importance to squad depth.
