Mandatory community service in Sarawak soon to punish litterbugs

SARAWAK has drafted a new law to punish those who indiscriminately throw rubbish in public with mandatory community service.

The state government has already drawn up a draft copy of the new law and had submitted it to the State Attorney General's Chamber.

Kuching City South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng revealed this in his social media post today.

"The new law on mandatory community service for those convicted of littering offences will be imposed in Sarawak soon.

"The draft of the new law is with the State Attorney General. Once approved, the draft will be presented back to the government ministry for further action.

"It is a matter of time before the law is implemented in public.

"This new law will definitely be effective in curbing the indiscriminate dumping of all sorts of rubbish in public places throughout Sarawak," he said.

Wee said the thought of being punished publicly for all to see should serve as a deterrent for those who are used to dumping rubbish anywhere they like.

He noted that at the national level, such a law is also being proposed.

"I think Sarawak will go ahead and enforce this new law before the federal side," he said.

Wee noted that mountains of rubbish are becoming daily woes in not just cities and towns in Sarawak but also in semi urban areas.

These rubbish are not just household wastes but also bulky industrial wastes, including from construction projects, he added. – February 23, 2025
