Manuel Ugarte avoids red card against England despite appearing to be booked twice

  • There was a bizarre incident during England’s game against Uruguay where midfielder Manuel Ugarte was seemingly showed two yellow cards but was not sent off.
  • The Manchester United midfielder was yellow-carded in the first half for a foul before being booked again in the 70th minute for talking back to German referee Sven Jablonski.
  • However, he remained on the pitch, with ITV commentator Sam Matterface initially saying the fourth official had rescinded the yellow card.
  • Ugarte was shortly substituted by manager Marcelo Bielsa and was replaced by Emiliano Martínez.
  • After the game ITV host Mark Pougatch attempted to clear up the confusion, saying the the second yellow card was rescinded and the first yellow card was actually for defender José María Giménez, meaning Ugarte did not get booked at all in the game.
