Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, the Chairman of the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), has brought to light a disconcerting issue that has been plaguing the institution. He revealed that a certain segment of Mara loan defaulters continue to live opulent lifestyles while refusing to repay their debts.
In a candid Facebook post, he stressed that there is nothing inherently wrong with enjoying the finer things in life but emphasized the moral and financial obligation of settling one's debts.
Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki shared that, despite the luxury and affluence displayed on social media by some of these defaulters, they have shown a reluctance to meet their financial obligations. In some cases, they even appealed to Mara, imploring them not to pursue legal action and promising to initiate repayment.
However, upon closer inspection of their social media profiles, it became evident that these individuals were maintaining lavish lifestyles, complete with high-end automobiles, while failing to fulfil their loan repayments.
The chairman emphasized the vital importance of understanding financial management and setting priorities. Asyraf expressed his concern by stating, "One should settle one's debts before spending lavishly. This is the main principle when it comes to financial management from an Islamic perspective. It's a sin not to settle one's debts." He drew attention to the moral and ethical implications of failing to honour financial commitments.
In the past month, Asyraf had revealed that numerous defaulters had approached him with requests to have their debts forgiven. However, he maintained that such actions were not feasible, given that the funds involved were derived from public resources. Instead, he expressed his willingness to assist by offering debt restructuring options and revised repayment plans, reflecting the organization's commitment to responsible financial stewardship.
The issue brought to light by Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki underscores the importance of financial responsibility and ethical conduct when it comes to loan repayment. It serves as a reminder that the opulent lifestyle while appealing, should never take precedence over one's financial obligations.
In an age of social media, where the allure of material wealth often takes centre stage, Asyraf's message serves as a valuable lesson in fiscal prudence and ethical financial conduct.
