MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. pointed to a damaged trash trap coupled with unprecedented rainfall as the main culprits behind the “sea of trash” that clogged the Redemptorist water channel in Baclaran, Parañaque City.
On Wednesday, Marcos inspected the water channel where heavy rainfall from the southwest monsoon or "habagat’ over the weekend clogged the waterway with tons of trash—which he said happened for the first time.
“This is the first time this happened here in Parañaque—three days ago. That sort of thing didn't happen before. It was mainly because there was so much trash, the trash trap was damaged, and there was a massive volume of water pouring down,” the President said in Filipino.
“The amount of rainfall last week was the equivalent of one month’s rainfall, almost one meter. That’s why this happened,” Marcos added.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has since deployed a trash skimmer to remove the garbage.
As of Ruesday, a total of 750 cubic meters and 500 metric tons of trash were delivered to the landfill by 45 trucks.
