(UPDATE) MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday urged the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) graduates to lead with integrity and humility and to help maintain the country's global standing in the maritime industry but at the same time assuring them of the government's protection amid geopolitical tensions affecting international shipping routes.
During the Commencement Exercises of the PMMA 'Salighirang' Class of 2026 in San Narciso, Zambales, Marcos urged them to apply what they have learned in their chosen field.
"Wherever the sea takes you, whether you serve under the Navy's flag, guard our shores, or fly our colors as merchant marine officers, never forget to bring that light with you. Carry yourselves with competence, lead with humility, and serve with integrity," Marcos said in his speech.
"As you sail across the globe, know that you have with you the hopes of your families, the lessons imparted by the Academy, and the support of a nation that believes in you," he added.
Marcos also said Filipino seafarers continued to perform their duties despite heightened security concerns and instability in key shipping routes, including those in the Middle East.
"The government’s duty does not end with standards and employability. Many of our seafarers continue to travel through uncertain waters, including the areas affected by conflict especially now in the Middle East," Marcos said.
"In this difficult situation, your safety and welfare remain our priority. Your government will always be within reach, ready to help," he added.
Marcos said the government strengthened maritime education and training, improved certification systems, upgraded facilities and equipment, and worked closely with our international partners to ensure that Philippine standards continue to meet global expectations.
"Through these efforts, we will continue to safeguard the global employability of Filipino seafarers. At the same time, we will uphold the highest international standards in our maritime education, training, and certification system," he said.
The 'Salighirang' Class of 2026, whose name draws from 'Salig,' signifying trust and sagisag ng liwanag (symbol of light), and 'Hirang,' meaning chosen and haliging huwaran (pillar and role model), comprises 327 graduating midshipmen—146 from the Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and 181 from the Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering.
Midshipman First Class Mark Owen Trilles of Tigaon, Camarines Sur leads the graduating class as the Class Valedictorian.
PMMA is a 206-year-old government-funded maritime institution that produces world-class Filipino merchant marine officers. Its graduates go on to serve in the Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard, and the Merchant Marine Fleet, contributing to the country's maritime industry and national security.
