The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has opened a safety investigation and deployed emergency response teams after a fire aboard the passenger vessel MV June Aster off Barangay Marcilla, Coron, Palawan, left at least five people dead and over 80 unaccounted for.
The 490-gross-ton passenger-cargo vessel, operated by Atienza Interisland Ferries, was carrying 117 passengers and 17 crew members when the fire broke out around 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, approximately 1.2 nautical miles northeast of the shoreline.
MARINA Regional Office IV personnel are actively coordinating with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to assist survivors rescued following the September 9 incident.
In a statement, Atienza Interisland Ferries expressed deep sadness over the tragedy, confirming that injured survivors received care at medical facilities, that specialized support teams were deployed for affected families, and that the company is cooperating with authorities.
MARINA’s Enforcement Service has initiated a Marine Safety Investigation to determine the cause of the fire and verify compliance with safety management standards.
The agency expressed support for the affected passengers, crew, and families, committing to release further updates as verified details emerge.
