
SEMPORNA: The Marine Police Force foiled an attempt to smuggle in cigarettes via Gelam-Gelam waters in Pulau Bum-Bum, here, Wednesday.
Sabah Region Four Marine Commander, ACP Nazri Ibrahim, said the Marine Intelligence Unit (URM) seized a total of 62,000 sticks of cigarettes, believed with unpaid tax following an operation at about 5.30am.
The team also detained a man, believed to be the boat skipper.
“Result of inspection on the speedboat found several boxes containing cigarettes believed to be smuggled in from the neighbouring country.
“All the seizures including cigarettes are estimated to be worth RM275,250,” he said, adding that the seizures were taken to the Semporna Marine base for further action.
Nazri said the case would be investigated under Section 135 of the Custom Act 1967.
Nazri said the Marine remains committed to combating smuggling activities throughout the country.
