Former “X Factor Philippines” finalist Mark Mabasa represented the country at “ASEAN Rhythms: A Cultural Celebration,” held April 25 at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Known to many listeners as “The Golden Voice,” Mabasa was the Filipino artist invited by the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles to perform at the cultural event, which brought together artists and representatives from Asean countries.
The gathering highlighted music and performances from the region, giving Mabasa the opportunity to present Original Pilipino Music before an international audience.
Mabasa opened his set with “Babalik Ka Rin,” a Gary Valenciano song long associated with longing, return and the emotional pull of home. It was a fitting choice for an audience that included Filipinos abroad, as well as guests from different Asean communities.
Through the song, Mabasa highlighted the sentiment that has allowed OPM to travel beyond language. Even for listeners unfamiliar with Filipino lyrics, the performance allowed the melody and emotion of the piece to carry its message.
He followed the number with “Heal the World,” turning the second half of his set into a call for peace, unity and shared hope. Audience members from different cultures sang along, creating one of the evening’s memorable moments.
For Mabasa, the experience was especially meaningful because he was not simply performing as an individual artist. On that stage, he carried the country’s name.
Mabasa drew warm applause from the crowd, with his performance underscoring how music can bridge audiences across cultures, especially in a gathering designed to celebrate regional identity and connection.
Mabasa first gained wider public attention through his run on “The X Factor Philippines,” where his voice and stage presence made him one of the competition’s standout acts. Since then, he has continued to perform for Filipino and international audiences, gradually building a career beyond the contest that introduced him to many viewers.
His UCLA performance adds another milestone to that journey. More than another stage appearance, it placed a Filipino voice within a broader Asean cultural showcase, where music became both introduction and reminder — that the Philippines continues to be represented by artists capable of moving audiences wherever they perform.
For the country’s music community, Mabasa’s participation also offered another welcome moment for OPM. His choice of “Babalik Ka Rin” gave the event a distinctly Filipino emotional center, while “Heal the World” allowed the audience to join him in a song whose message needed no translation.
The result was a performance that was celebratory without losing its sincerity. It showed Mabasa not only as a singer with a powerful voice, but as an artist able to carry a song with enough feeling to reach listeners beyond language and nationality.
At “Asean Rhythms,” that was the larger point of the evening. Different countries brought their own sounds and stories to one stage. For the Philippines, Mabasa brought both pride and heart.
