Police seize over 16kg of cocaine worth RM7.31 million found on a Pekan beach, with the drugs believed to have been at sea before washing up.
PEKAN: Police have seized a massive haul of cocaine worth an estimated RM7.31 million after it was discovered washed ashore on a beach here.
The discovery of more than 16 kilogrammes of the drug followed a tip-off from the public yesterday.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said a team from the state’s Criminal Investigation Department inspected the coastal area of Pantai Tanjung Gosong at 2.45 pm.
“A further inspection found that the bag contained 14 compressed black packages labelled ‘stone’, believed to be cocaine, with an estimated weight of 16.263kg,” he said.
He added that six other packages were found but their contents had already dissolved.
Yahaya said initial investigations indicated the bag had been in the sea for some time before washing up.
He stated the current market value of the drugs is estimated at RM450,000 per kilogramme.
The quantity seized could potentially affect more than 80,000 drug users if distributed.
A witness has been called in to assist with the investigation as police gather further information.
