Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg are set to visit Sabah on September 16 to participate in the Malaysia Day celebrations. The event, hosted by Sabah, aims to foster a sense of patriotism and national pride among the attendees.

Federal Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, whose ministry is co-organizing the celebration with the Sabah Tourism, Culture, and Environment Ministry, expressed optimism about the event's turnout. "We are expecting between 30,000 to 40,000 attendees, and we are hopeful for good weather. For those who cannot make it in person, the event will be available for viewing through a live feed," he said. Fahmi emphasized that the event is designed to encourage unity and a shared love for the nation among all Malaysians.

As preparations continue, Fahmi, who also serves as the Lembah Pantai MP, highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure smooth connectivity at the venue, Padang Merdeka, a historic field in Sabah. "Given the large crowd expected, we are working to ensure that there will be no connectivity issues and are addressing other logistical concerns at the venue," he stated. He added that he recently paid a courtesy visit to the Sabah Head of State, Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, who shared some suggestions about the event. "We are doing our best to accommodate his views and make the event as inclusive as possible," Fahmi noted.

While Fahmi did not disclose specific details about the program lineup for the Malaysia Day event, he hinted at a mix of familiar elements from past celebrations, along with performances by some internationally recognized local talents. "I believe we have planned a great show that will not only be entertaining but also ignite a strong sense of patriotism and love for our country," he remarked.

The Malaysia Day celebration on September 16 is particularly significant as it marks the day in 1963 when Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore joined Malaya to form Malaysia. This year’s event will hold special meaning as it takes place in Sabah, providing a platform to honor the state’s unique role in the formation of the country and its continued contributions to the nation’s development.

Addressing a question about some Sabahans' dissatisfaction with the messaging around the country’s independence anniversary, Fahmi acknowledged the concerns. The minister recognized that Malaysia is celebrating its 61st year of independence, not the 67th as stated in some recent messaging. He assured the public that he would bring this issue to the relevant parties for discussion and future reference. "We understand the sensitivity around these historical dates and will strive to ensure accurate representation in all our communications moving forward," he said.

As the Malaysia Day celebration approaches, the organizers are working tirelessly to create a memorable experience for all attendees, both in person and virtually. With the anticipated presence of national leaders like Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg, the event promises to be a significant gathering of Malaysians, united in their love for the country and commitment to its future. Fahmi's remarks underscore the importance of unity and patriotism, especially in a diverse nation like Malaysia, where each state brings its unique culture and history to the national tapestry.
