Massive French wildfire creates ‘fire cloud’ lightning storm near Bordeaux

  • Over 250,000 people have been ordered to evacuate in southwest France as wildfires near Bordeaux have scorched more than 42,000 hectares of land, with authorities warning the blaze could continue for several months.
  • The fires are being exacerbated by a phenomenon known as 'fire clouds' (pyrocumulonimbus or 'pyroCB' clouds), which are unique weather systems that form directly within the fire plume.
  • These 'fire-breathing dragon of clouds' generate their own volatile weather, creating intense updrafts and downdrafts that lead to powerful, unpredictable wind gusts and dry lightning, which can trigger new spot fires.
  • Firefighters face immense challenges, describing the situation as a 'David-versus-Goliath scenario' because the fire spreads in multiple directions with a constantly shifting front, making direct combat extremely difficult.
  • While historically linked to extreme wildfire seasons in Australia and California, the potential confirmation of a pyroCB cloud in France would be a first for the country, with climate change and more frequent heatwaves across Europe cited as key factors for their increasing occurrence.
