Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu has encouraged Malaysians to grow vegetables and raise fish at home to help manage rising living costs.

In a Facebook post, he shared that he keeps two fish ponds at his house, one for red tilapia and another for gourami.

If you have a bit of land at home, besides planting vegetables, you can also use it to raise fish,” he wrote.

He added, “The best part, especially during Ramadan, is that you can just catch two to three fish from the pond and cook them right away for breaking fast.”

Encourages self-sufficiency

Mohamad Sabu said having a small pond at home can help reduce daily food expenses while ensuring fresh produce.

It’s fresh, and most importantly, it really helps save on kitchen expenses,” he said.

He also asked, “Is anyone interested in building a small pond like mine?”

Mixed reactions from netizens

His post sparked mixed reactions online, with some supporting the idea and sharing experiences of community gardening, even in urban areas using pots and containers.

Others, however, criticised the suggestion, saying not everyone has land or space to implement such ideas.

Some also questioned the practicality of the advice for city dwellers living in smaller homes.
