It is heartening to learn from the official announcement of the Ministry of Higher Education that Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. Osman Bakar, the Distinguished Holder of Al-Ghazali Chair at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC) has been appointed as the new Rector of IIUM effective from 23rd September, 2024. He obtained Bachelor and Masters degrees in Mathematics from the University of London, United Kingdom and Doctorate degree in Islamic Philosophy from University of Temple, in the USA.
Prof Osman is a known Islamic thinker in Malaysia, and a reputable educator in the philosophy & Islamic Civilisation recognised internationally and listed in the top 500 influential scholars of the world in 2009. He subscribed to evidences as stated in the verses of Holy Quran explained the concepts of mathematics such as numbers, shapes and connection.
I learned and agreed with Prof Osman, when he said, “The vibrant history of the Islamic Civilisation contains pertinent positive case lessons on strategic management leadership, especially in the worldly context. The founding history of an empire offers to its people valuable important lessons into the strategic management leadership principles essential for success in all fields. The events in the transition from one empire to another are of the types, which are high pressured and fast moving. These events test the human intellect & wisdom to the highest limits and produce great thoughts and actions, and their subsequent great agents of change. We all have a superhero within us, waiting to be unleashed."
I fully concurred with Prof Osman that as humans, it is our nature to want to make a meaningful impact on this planet, to touch the lives of those around us, and to leave behind a lasting legacy. We yearn to be an agent of change. We are fortunate to live in a time where technology has supercharged our ability to create , to communicate & to collaborate, giving us more tools and gadgets in our utility belts than at any time in history. IIUM is a garden. A homeland to be nurtured. I know Prof Osman is ready to accept the challenge.
