

I learned some hard skills by observing from the sidelines of my grandson Fayyadh's training facilitated by the Head Coach Ammar of Ortan FC Football Academy at Multimedia University (MMU) Cyberjaya. He offerred insights and demonstrated techniques into how Fayyadh can practice the principles in action and execute a plan to learn anything deeply and quickly in short period of time for results.
While my observation to the electric group of intense dynamics started with seeing examples of unusual learning feats, to go forward we need something more concise. The coaching that required Fayyadh and team for acquiring skills and knowledge that is both self-directed and intense. It's about how they take actions about what to learn and why. It's possible to be a truly completely self-directed learner. Similarly, thgey could “teach themselves” something on their own by mindlessly following the steps outlined during training.
To me as a management educator & sejahtera leadership coach, FC Ammar's method is the very definition of a confident player-coach relationship. A confident coach will throw out an idea and have it stress-tested by the players; a confident player will take a good idea and make it their own. I know that a coach will see things a player can't feel, and that a player will feel things that a coach can't see.
Based on my work experience, I found a confident player-coach relationship is one which learning is high-cadence and two-way; where the on- and off-pitch perspectives are embraced and where there is a degree of positive or managed tension. A coaching idea can look world class on paper and then be found wanting in practice. The same is true in business, when a strategy that looked great in theory falls short in execution. Is it our execution that's letting down a robust strategy, or do we have a more crucial fundamental problem?
