MANILA, Philippines — Water concessionaire Maynilad confirmed on Monday that two workers died when an excavation site collapse in Barangay Pamplona Dos, Las Piñas City.
Work has been suspended as authorities investigate the incident.
The incident happened at a construction site for a wastewater pumping facility under the Las Piñas Conveyance System Package 2 along Aquarius Street, Pamplona Park Subdivision.
In a radio interview, Lieutenant Colonel Teoson Rosarito, assistant police chief of Las Piñas, said the 18-meter-deep excavation collapsed on five men while they were working at the site on Sunday, June 28.
Rosarito said rescue teams retrieved the last trapped worker at around 4:30 p.m. on the same day, but two of the workers were already dead.
Maynilad said it is “deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident” and extended its condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the two workers.
“We are coordinating with our contractor to extend assistance to the affected families and are working closely with the authorities in the investigation,” the company said.
