MANILA, Philippines—Mayon Volcano spewed ash again on Monday, February 9, affecting several villages in the towns of Camalig and Guinobatan in Albay.
Teresito Bacolcol, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) director, said the volcano started producing large pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) at 10:35 a.m. Phivolcs said PDCs are mixtures of fragmented volcanic particles (pyroclastics), hot gases and ash that rush down the volcanic slopes.
“It also generated an extensive one kilometer-tall brownish plume that drifted to the southwest and brought ashfall over several villages of the towns of Camalig and Guinobatan in Albay province,” the Phivolcs chief said.
Alert Level 3 (high level of unrest) has been maintained over the Albay volcano and entry into the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone remains prohibited, Phivolcs said.
