
Kota Kinabalu: The Waterfront Masterplan is a pivotal strategy for the city, focusing on enhancing coastal management infrastructures while leveraging the unique opportunities Kota Kinabalu offers.
Mayor Datuk Noorliza Awang Alip said the long-term coastal management plan and climate-resilient zoning considered current and future climate risks, including policy measures, structural engineering and nature-based solutions.
“The plan also aims to revitalise waterfront coastal areas, striking a balance between economic tourism growth and environmental stewardship,” she said in a statement, Wednesday.
“By prioritising disaster risk reduction, City Hall aims to benefit its inhabitants and position itself as a tourism destination.

Identifying applicable mitigation and adaptation benefits, she said the City Hall has integrated strategic interventions into the Plan KK 2035 as well as the Kota Kinabalu City Hall’s Strategic Plan 2023-2026, which was launched in early November.
“These initiatives strengthen the regulatory framework and enhance the city’s ability to finance long-term bankable projects,” she said.
Acknowledging the impact of climate change on urban sectors, including transportation, infrastructures and natural resources, the City Hall recognises the need for comprehensive action.
“Building upon the initiative from Kota Kinabalu Green City Action Plan and the engagements it has fostered, the City Hall has proactively sought technical support from the European Union (EU) through the Global Covenant’s of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM),” she said.
