A local court has remanded Mohit Verma to four days of police custody following the brutal murder of 24-year-old Kamaldeep Mittal, a final-year MBBS student. Verma, a childhood friend and neighbour of the victim, was apprehended on Wednesday following a manhunt aided by technical surveillance.

Kamaldeep, a student at Government Medical College, was discovered murdered Monday in his rented accommodation in New Lal Bagh Colony. The autopsy report painted a gruesome picture. The victim sustained over 30 stab wounds to his face and neck, with the force of the attack severing his vocal cords.

Investigators have traced the motive to a significant financial dispute. Preliminary findings suggest Kamaldeep transferred approximately Rs 38 lakh to Verma over the past two years. This amount was allegedly split between online gaming platform Dream11 and investments in Bitcoin that resulted in massive losses.

While the victim’s father, Mahinderpal Mittal, alleged that Verma had been extorting money from his son, the police suspect the flashpoint occurred when Kamaldeep began demanding return of his money.

SSP Varun Sharma revealed a chilling detail. He said an amount of Rs 25,000 was transferred from the victim’s phone to Verma’s account immediately after the murder.

“This indicates the suspect had full access to the victim’s passwords,” the SSP noted. “The password was linked to the birth date of a mutual female acquaintance. We are currently probing her background to determine if there is a deeper connection to the crime,” the SSP said.

Verma, a college dropout employed at his father’s jewellery shop, reportedly stayed overnight in Kamaldeep’s room before the Monday morning attack. The violence was so extreme that the handle of the murder weapon broke during the assault, leaving Verma with self-inflicted injuries.

The suspect’s movements following the crime provided key leads. Verma sought treatment for his injuries at a local hospital, but fled mid-treatment, later resurfacing at a facility in Samana for stitches. CCTV camera footage near the PG accommodation captured Verma fleeing the scene in blood-stained clothing. The police have recovered the weapon and blood-soaked clothes, both of which have been sent for forensic analysis to solidify the scientific evidence against the suspect.
