Kota Kinabalu: Tham Yau Kong who retraced the Sandakan-Ranau Death March Route in 2005 and was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for it received it, here, Wednesday.
Tham’s contribution in identifying the exact 260 kilometre-long route, where over 2,000 British and Australian allied Prisoners of War (POW) died during World War II, helped uncover military history that was lost for 60 years.
British High Commissioner to Malaysia Charles Hay said Tham’s conservation efforts raised important historical awareness and rediscovered a significant piece of history that is important both to the UK and Malaysia.
