SHAH ALAM, July 17 - The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will implement the Safer School Streets initiative on Jalan 21/37 and Jalan SS2/3 to improve safety for students and pedestrians around SMK Taman Sea.
State executive councillor for investment, trade, and mobility Ng Sze Han said a survey conducted in the area found that some 800 pedestrians were observed crossing from the Taman Bahagia LRT station and walking 500 metres to the school within just one-and-a-half hours.
However, some vehicles were recorded travelling at speeds up to 85km/h, highlighting safety concerns and increased traffic risks within the school zone.
“Starting July 20, MBPJ will implement the Safer School Streets initiative on Jalan 21/37 and Jalan SS2/3 to create a safer environment for everyone.
“Among the improvements to be implemented are comfortable pedestrian walkways, elevated pedestrian crossings, safer intersections, traffic calming measures, and a 30km/h speed limit within the school zone,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Ng added that the state government, together with local authorities, remains fully committed to developing pedestrian-friendly cities across Selangor.
“Cooperation from all parties is vital to achieving a safer, more sustainable and higher quality Selangor for all,” he said.
