Candidates made last-ditch efforts to woo voters by holding roadshows, public meetings and quick tours as campaigning for the Ambala Municipal Corporation election came to an end on Friday. The voting will be held on Sunday.
Sixty-five candidates are in the fray for councillor posts across 20 wards. BJP’s Akshita Saini, Kulwinder Kaur of the Congress and Independent Sonia Rani are contesting for the post of mayor. As the Indian National Lok Dal has extended support to Independent candidate Sonia Rani, party’s chief Abhay Singh Chautala on Friday addressed a public meeting and appealed to the voters to elect an honest representative.
Abhay Chautala said, “The roads, sanitation and other basic amenities are in a poor condition. The errors in property IDs have been a cause of harassment for the public. The BJP has become a problem for the entire nation and the misuse of power in West Bengal is a recent example. The people of Ambala have the opportunity to teach a lesson to the party for its wrong policies.”
Meanwhile, the Congress held a roadshow in which party’s mayoral candidate Kulwinder Kaur and all 20 candidates participated. The roadshow started from Gurdwara Manji Sahib and concluded at Jagadhri gate. The party leaders appealed to the residents to vote for the Congress candidates to eliminate corruption from the MC. District Congress (Urban) president Pawan Aggarwal said, “The party is confident of getting a majority in the House and winning the mayor’s post.”
Rajya Sabha MP Kartikeya Sharma, who was campaigning for BJP candidates, said, “The party has fielded capable and strong candidates and they will resolve all issues related to the corporation. Our candidates will win with big margins. We will ensure a smooth development of all the wards under the corporation.” Former Minister of State Aseem Goel held public meetings in support of BJP candidates.
“While MPs and MLAs of the Congress are seeking votes for the party candidates, they have few achievements to showcase. With BJP governments at the Centre and in the state, we are confident that the people of Ambala will not miss the opportunity of electing a mayor from the party, enabling a triple-engine government,” Goel added.
