MCCC Sabah gala highlights China ties amid rising costs

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah held its first gala under new president Datuk Dexter Lau, focusing on closer ties with China to cushion the impact of the global fuel crisis and rising costs.

The “Timeless Elegance · A Night of Brilliance” dinner at Marriott drew over 300 guests, with Lau stressing a culture-first approach to build trust before business, as industries face supply disruptions and higher prices, especially for oil-based products like plastics.

He said stronger Sabah-China cooperation can help businesses find new markets, manage excess stock and ease cost pressures, while also promoting Sabah globally, with the event livestreamed across 40 platforms reaching about 100 million impressions in China.

State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the turnout reflects continued investor interest despite global uncertainty, while Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai highlighted cultural exchange as key to boosting tourism and long-term cooperation.
