In Kuala Lumpur, the police have successfully recorded the statement of an individual who allegedly used a counterfeit number plate on a high-end MacLaren luxury vehicle. The statement was recorded at the Kuala Lumpur Traffic police station, as confirmed by the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief, Asst Comm Sarifudin Mohd Salleh.
The case is currently under investigation, following the guidelines of Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The investigation paper, which will contain all the details and findings of the case, will be forwarded to the Deputy Public Prosecutor once the investigation is concluded. This was confirmed by Sarifudin Mohd Salleh during a recent interaction with the media.
The case came into the limelight when the Road Transport Department (JPJ) sought the assistance of the police to locate a man known as Opai. Opai, who is married to a well-known actress, was suspected of using the unregistered number plate "QPA 1" on a McLaren luxury car. The police were called the aid to an investigation due to the serious nature of the offence.
Erick Jusiang, the deputy director of KL JPJ, stated that the department had no choice but to seek the help of the police. This decision was made after Opai failed to cooperate with the authorities, even after a formal notice was issued requesting him to report to the JPJ office.
The case has attracted significant public attention, not just because of the illegal use of the number plate but also due to Opai's controversial behaviour. He was heavily criticised after a video of him allegedly insulting non-supercar vehicles at a car exhibition went viral on social media. The video sparked outrage among netizens, leading to increased scrutiny of his actions.
The use of a fake number plate is a serious offence under the Road Transport Act 1987. If found guilty, the offender could face severe penalties, including hefty fines and imprisonment. The authorities are committed to ensuring that all road users abide by the law, regardless of their social status or the type of vehicle they drive.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working closely with the JPJ to ensure a thorough and fair investigation. The outcome of the case will be determined by the Deputy Public Prosecutor once all the evidence has been reviewed.
This case serves as a reminder to all vehicle owners about the importance of adhering to the law. Using a fake number plate is not only illegal but also poses a risk to road safety. The authorities will continue to take strict action against those who flout the law, ensuring the safety and security of all road users.
