MCMC takes action over recirculated 2024 video from Singapore deemed insulting to Islam, working with platforms to block content in Malaysia.
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is taking action over the recirculation of a 2024 video containing content deemed insulting to Islam.
The commission said it had received public complaints regarding the video, which is believed to have been re-uploaded recently.
“Based on preliminary investigations, the individual involved is believed to be a Singaporean and the incident is also understood to have taken place in Singapore,” MCMC stated.
The video’s content includes an act of stepping on the Quran and has triggered anger and tension within the community.
MCMC added that it is working closely with relevant social media platforms, particularly Threads, Facebook and TikTok, to ensure appropriate measures are taken.
These measures include blocking the distribution of and access to the content within Malaysia.
The commission stressed that disseminating content that touches on religious sensitivities is irresponsible.
Such actions have the potential to disrupt harmony in Malaysia’s multiracial and multi-religious society and may be subject to legal action under existing laws.
“The public is advised not to upload, share or recirculate such content,” the statement read.
Members of the public with relevant information may lodge a complaint via MCMC’s official portal.
They may also report the matter to the Royal Malaysia Police for further action.
