PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is investigating 17 individuals for allegedly spreading false information online. The viral posts concerned fuel price hikes and new electricity tariffs.
Statements have been recorded from eight individuals so far. Five cases involve false posts about fuel price increases.
Three suspects in the fuel price cases had their statements recorded earlier. The remaining two were recorded yesterday.
There are also three cases involving false information about new electricity tariffs. The remaining nine suspects are under further monitoring and will be called in soon.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Upon conviction, it provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
MCMC stressed it views seriously any misuse of social media intended to mislead the public. “The spread of such false information can create panic and anxiety among the public,” it said in a statement.
It added that stern action would be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws.
