The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in a press statement has revealed that the commission in collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is investigating controversial figure Adeline Chang for allegedly posting a photo of a minor on Facebook with an obscene caption.
This is after the commission received complaints from the public regarding the “Adeline Chang” Facebook account, with the owner of the account summoned to the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters to record her statement on Friday (21 June).
MCMC confiscated Adeline’s mobile phone and SIM card
Prior to Friday, MCMC had sent a notice to Adeline for her to be present at the Petaling Jaya District Police Headquarters through the established procedure.
MCMC added that during the recording of her statement, the commission had confiscated a mobile phone and a SIM card believed to be hers that was used to upload the alleged obscene content online.
She may face up to RM50,000 fine, 1 year in jail, or both
The investigation is under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network services.
Should the suspect be charged and convicted under the provision, she may face up to RM50,000 fine, up to 1 year in jail, or both.
Furthermore, the suspect may also be liable to a further fine of RM1,000 per day during which the offence is continued after conviction, as per Section 233(3) of the Act.
Hence, MCMC reminded the public to be mindful before uploading any content on social media, especially if it involves children.
