AUTHORITIES have launched an investigation into five individuals suspected of circulating false information about petrol and diesel price increases on the social media platform Threads.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) confirmed that three of the five suspects have been summoned for recorded statements to aid the inquiry.
The content in question, which falsely claimed hikes in fuel prices, was deemed misleading and likely to provoke public anxiety.
Further checks revealed that the viral posts had misused the visual identity of Buletin TV3, prompting the broadcaster to issue a denial.
MCMC noted that the false content did not originate from Buletin TV3 but was created by a third party.
Investigations are being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both if the individuals are found guilty.
MCMC emphasised that any abuse of social media platforms to mislead the public will be treated with the utmost seriousness.
“Strict action will be taken against anyone found violating existing laws,” the commission said.
The public has been reminded to use social media responsibly and avoid uploading or sharing content that could disrupt community harmony or public order. - April 2, 2026
