KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has issued a stern warning to all parties against creating or disseminating content related to race, religion and royalty (3R), particularly material that is provocative, insulting, incites hatred, or could trigger public tension.
In a statement today, MCMC stressed that it views seriously any misuse of network services and online platforms that could undermine societal harmony.
“We are giving a firm reminder to all users not to produce or share 3R-related content that is provocative, insulting, or capable of inciting hatred and public unrest,” the commission said.
The regulator also urged the public to verify the authenticity of information before sharing it, cautioning that the spread of unverified content could lead to misunderstanding and hostility.
“ We advise the public to check the validity of information before disseminating it to avoid confusion and conflict,” it added.
The commission said it will work closely with the police and other relevant agencies to monitor, investigate, and take enforcement action against content that violates the law.
Offenders may face action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries penalties of up to RM500,000 in fines, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
MCMC also warned that action could be taken against platform providers that fail to cooperate, reminding them of their responsibility to comply with Malaysian laws and prevent misuse of their services. - May 3, 2026
