MCMC, PDRM ordered to probe insulting content targeting Prophet Muhammad

THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have been directed to investigate allegations involving a fake social media account believed to have uploaded content insulting Prophet Muhammad.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said he had yet to receive sufficient information to determine whether the allegations were genuine.

“I will check with both the PDRM and the MCMC regarding the status of the matter. Normally, when a complaint is lodged, the individual believed to be involved will be called in to assist with investigations for verification purposes.

“The MCMC acts as the technical agency by obtaining information from the relevant social media platform and conducting forensic analysis before it can confirm whether a particular device was used to upload the content on the date in question.

“I have also requested the MCMC to issue a statement regarding this issue,” he told a press conference after attending the handover ceremony for Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Pantai in Kuala Lumpur today.

The remarks followed the circulation of claims on Threads alleging that a social media account had published content insulting Prophet Muhammad, triggering widespread public anger.

However, a Facebook user whose identity was allegedly linked to the account denied ownership, claiming that another individual had used his name and photograph to create the account and publish the offensive posts.

The individual subsequently lodged a police report, and the case has been referred to the MCMC for further investigation. - July 24, 2026
