KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have reaffirmed their joint commitment to combating online child sexual exploitation through sustained enforcement and public awareness initiatives.
In a joint statement today, the two agencies said a total of 1,501 offensive posts involving children were identified as of June 15.
Of these, 94% were successfully removed with the cooperation of digital platform providers and based on public complaints.
They also reported that 13 individuals had been arrested and over 40,000 items of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) seized in various states as part of special operations such as “Op Pedo”.
The dissemination, storage, or commercialisation of child sexual exploitation content is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a penalty of up to RM1 million, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
In addition, the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 provides for legal action against any individual who produces, distributes, purchases, sells, shares, or possesses such material.
As a preventive measure, the MCMC has intensified its Safe Internet Campaign (KIS), which targets students, parents, and the wider community. The campaign also underscores the prohibition on children under the age of 13 using social media accounts.
The MCMC and PDRM called on all parties — including parents, educators, and internet users — to play their part in efforts to combat this crime.
