MALAYSIA’S communications regulator has opened an investigation into three individuals suspected of spreading false claims regarding electricity tariff increases online, in a case highlighting growing concerns over digital misinformation.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said the individuals were believed to have disseminated misleading content across platforms including Facebook, Threads and WhatsApp.
The material allegedly incorporated graphic elements resembling those used by a news organisation to lend credibility.
Authorities said complaints indicated that the claims regarding a purported increase in electricity tariffs were fabricated and capable of creating negative public perceptions, potentially triggering anxiety and panic.
Preliminary checks found the content had been altered from official material originally published by Astro AWANI.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries penalties of up to RM500,000 in fines, imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction.
MCMC said it viewed any misuse of digital platforms to mislead the public with utmost seriousness and warned that firm action would be taken against those found to have breached existing laws.
It also urged the public to act responsibly online and refrain from uploading or sharing content that could undermine social harmony or public order, as enforcement efforts intensify against the spread of false information. - April 1, 2026
