KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has confirmed it is probing a Facebook post accused of carrying 3R (race, religion, royalty) content insulting Islam.

In a hardline statement, the regulator stressed it “will not compromise on any misuse of communication platforms that violates the law.”

MCMC said it is working hand-in-glove with police, ready to deploy “technical assistance and digital forensic expertise” to strengthen the investigation.

The case falls under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum penalty of RM500,000 fine, two years’ jail, or both upon conviction.

The commission warned that such content “has the potential to incite hatred, undermine social unity and threaten racial harmony in the country.”

It also reminded Malaysians to use social media “responsibly and ethically” and to avoid uploading or sharing material that is “grossly offensive, insulting or inflammatory, particularly on matters relating to religion. - July 25, 2026
