SHAH ALAM, Jan 9 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating Perikatan Nasional’s Sungai Burong state assemblyman Mohd Zamri Mohd Zainuldin for a slanderous statement against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
It recorded his statement on Tuesday (January 7) after receiving multiple reports of several Facebook accounts sharing a false statement involving Anwar recently.
“Our investigation revealed that most of the accounts involved were fake accounts. However, the MCMC identified that one of the accounts belonged to the Sungai Burong assemblyman.

“During the questioning conducted together with the Royal Malaysia Police, a smartphone and a SIM card were confiscated as case evidence to assist in the probe. Forensic analysis will be carried out on the device for further investigation,” MCMC said in a statement.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides a maximum fine of RM50,000, or imprisonment up to one year, or both.
The Facebook posting, which accused Anwar of expressing solidarity for activist Iswardy Morni — who was recently found guilty of making seditious and insulting remarks against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong three years ago — was made under the account name ‘Dr. Zamri Mantop DZM’.
A check on the account found that the post has since been deleted.
Selangor Pakatan Harapan lodged a police report against Zamri, who is also Selangor PAS Ulama chief, on Saturday (January 4).
Meanwhile, the MCMC also urged the public to exercise caution when posting on social media and to ensure that the information shared is accurate and verified.
“This is to maintain an online environment that is safe and trustworthy for the well-being of all citizens,” it said.
