MCMC is seeking clarification from Anthropic over allegations that its Claude AI platform was used to manipulate political influence and target Malaysian voters.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is seeking further information from AI firm Anthropic over allegations that its Claude platform was used in an operation to manipulate political influence and target Malaysian voters.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the government viewed the allegations seriously and was awaiting clarification from the company before determining the appropriate course of action.

He said Anthropic had alleged that an overseas entity used its Claude AI technology to develop several components of the operation, including voter-targeting systems, networks of fake social media accounts and fabricated news websites.

“The company also linked the operation to BBS Bilisim Teknolojileri, a technology firm based in Istanbul, Türkiye, and claimed that accounts identified in connection with the operation had been terminated, with mitigation measures implemented.

“These steps are important to ensure that any assessment and follow-up action are based on sufficient information and evidence,” he said in a written parliamentary reply.

Fahmi was responding to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who asked about measures taken by the government to conduct a comprehensive investigation and prevent foreign entities from interfering in Malaysian elections through Claude and other AI applications.

He said MCMC would determine the appropriate follow-up action based on the information and evidence obtained, in accordance with its jurisdiction and relevant laws.

This could include cooperation with enforcement and security agencies, platform providers and other relevant parties, where necessary.

Fahmi said any regulatory or enforcement measures would be undertaken under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the Online Safety Act 2025 and other applicable laws within MCMC’s jurisdiction.

He added that the Digital Ministry was also drafting an Artificial Intelligence Governance Bill to strengthen the country’s AI governance framework.

The proposed legislation would cover accountability, risk management and the responsibilities of parties involved in developing and deploying AI systems.

Fahmi said the government would continue strengthening its monitoring of potential AI misuse and cooperation with technology providers, digital platforms and relevant agencies to address online harm and maintain a safe, transparent and trusted digital environment.
