KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will hold talks next week with social media platform providers to explore the implementation of the electronic Know-Your-Customer (eKYC) process, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
The discussions, which will take place in Singapore, will involve key players such as Meta, Google, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok, along with various government departments and agencies.
The aim is to establish secure mechanisms for the eKYC process, using official identification documents like MyKad, passports, and MyDigital ID, to ensure the safety of users, especially those under the age of 16.
"We recognise that protecting children from online harms, such as paedophiles, is a major challenge. This is why the eKYC process is necessary," Fahmi said in the Dewan Rakyat today
He further emphasised that the implementation of the eKYC process would comply with the Personal Data Protection Act to prevent data breaches or misuse.
"The most critical aspect is online safety, particularly for children and families," he added.
Fahmi was responding to a supplementary question from Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi), who asked about measures to be introduced should the government impose a ban on social media usage for minors under the age of 16.
The Communications Minister also highlighted the role of the Online Safety Act, which came into effect in January this year.
This legislation requires social media platforms to be licensed, ensuring that users are protected from potential online threats, including scams and exploitation.
"The licensing regime introduced under the Online Safety Act is essential for maintaining a secure digital environment," Fahmi said, stressing that the government’s efforts align with broader data protection laws and are crucial for safeguarding online interactions. - October 28, 2025
