"Misleading Video of PM Anwar’s CNN Interview Sparks Outcry: Government Denounces Slander"
PUTRAJAYA, Nov 15 — A video of Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s interview with CNN’s Richard Quest on the Israel-Palestine conflict has sparked controversy after being edited to misrepresent his stance. The edited clip, which has gone viral, falsely implies that the Malaysian government recognizes Israel, a claim strongly refuted by the government.
Fahmi Fadzil, Malaysia’s Communications Minister and Unity Government spokesperson, described the video as “slander” and an intentional attempt to create confusion. He emphasized that the edited footage does not accurately reflect the prime minister’s consistent position on Palestine. “This is slander, a despicable allegation,” Fahmi said during a media briefing. “The video takes a specific portion of the prime minister’s statement out of context to suggest that Malaysia recognizes Israel. However, in the full interview, the prime minister clearly reaffirmed Malaysia’s unwavering stance on defending Palestine.”
Malaysia’s Stance on Palestine
Fahmi reiterated that Malaysia has always been resolute in its support for Palestine. The country does not recognize the “illegitimate state of Israel” and has consistently advocated for the protection and rights of the Palestinian people. He pointed out that this position has been upheld across multiple administrations.
“The prime minister addressed this issue on the first day of the parliamentary session, proposing a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly to expel the illegitimate state of Israel. He even conveyed this strong stance to the U.S. Secretary of State,” Fahmi noted.
Clarifying the Two-State Solution
The viral clip also triggered confusion regarding Malaysia’s support for the “two-state solution.” Fahmi clarified that this approach has been a long-standing position of Malaysia, supported by past leaders dating back to 2002. “It is evident that the two-state solution has been part of Malaysia’s diplomatic stance for decades, and it aligns with the country’s commitment to a peaceful resolution in the region,” he said.
Action Against Misinformation
To address the dissemination of the edited video, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been directed to investigate. Fahmi stressed the need to curb the spread of such defamatory content, which can mislead the public and damage the government’s credibility.
“I want to be clear: the government respects media freedom, but it is vital to differentiate between facts and baseless speculation. If necessary, stricter measures will be considered to ensure accountability,” he added.
Combating False Narratives
Fahmi expressed frustration over the actions of individuals behind the edited clip. “No matter what we do, some will always distort the truth. What’s important is our continued commitment to a better future for Palestine,” he said.
The controversy highlights the challenges faced by governments in combating misinformation, particularly when sensitive geopolitical issues are at stake. For Malaysia, this episode reinforces its steadfast dedication to Palestine while calling for greater vigilance against attempts to manipulate public opinion.
As the investigation unfolds, the government aims to ensure that Malaysia’s long-standing principles on the Israel-Palestine conflict are not misrepresented or undermined.
