KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has advised social media users to act ethically and responsibly when sharing content, particularly during the election season.
In a statement, the commission stressed that differing political views are part of a democratic society, but they must be expressed politely, with decorum, and without breaching any laws.
“Use digital platforms as a channel to disseminate accurate and constructive information, not as a space to spread hatred, provocation, or insults against any party, which could undermine national harmony and stability,” the statement read.
MCMC emphasised that sharing false, offensive, or threatening content is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998.
The commission noted that the prohibition also covers content that insults religion, race, or the Royal Institution, commonly referred to as the 3R issues.
“Upon conviction, offenders may be fined up to RM500,000, imprisoned for a maximum of two years, or both.
“MCMC will take firm action, including investigations and enforcement, against any party found violating the law,” it said.
The commission added that it is working closely with PDRM and the Election Commission (SPR) to ensure accountability and maintain public order. - November 15, 2025
