MCMC warns against incitement over 'Allah shoes'

THE authorities will act against parties attempting to exploit the issue of a shoe logo allegedly resembling the word “Allah” to raise tensions in the country.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in a statement, urged people with information on the matter to report to the authorities.

"Following the statement by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), MCMC urges any parties who have any information relating to the shoe logo alleged to resemble the word 'Allah' to report it to the authorities, including the police.

"MCMC will not hesitate to take action under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 should any party attempt to exploit the issue, including making comments that exceed boundaries and can cause tension among the various races in the country," it said.

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and other authorities must be alllowed investigate the claims. it said.

MCMC reminded the public not to upload or share social media content that touches on the sensitivities of race, royalty and religion.

Religious affairs minister Datuk Mohd Na'im Mokhtar yesterday said parties involved in the latest controversy involving a local brand purportedly depicting the word “Allah” on the soles of its shoes, have been ordered to explain themselves to Jakim.

He called for calm and asked the public to allow Jakim and the authorities to investigate the issue.

Earlier today, Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh demanded an explanation from the local shoe company.

He said on Facebook that although he thought the design did not appear to be a word, he still sought clarification from the shoemaker. – April 8, 2024
